Practicing Irregularly Spelled High-Frequency Words

Katina Johnson, a reading specialist at Riverside Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio, uses a multisensory technique to practice reading and spelling "red words," or words that don't follow the phonics patterns her students have learned so far. She shows students that once they learn more phonics patterns, they can sound out some of these words.
