Essential Support

Essential support is a phrase that we use to describe the necessary and intentional supports teachers provide to ensure that all students are showing growth. Our English Learners, for example, may need additional modeling by their teacher to learn how sounds and spelling patterns in English differ from their home language. Students who use African American English at home may need additional exposure to General American English texts. Students with dyslexia may require additional instruction and more opportunities for guided practice with feedback.
